Lesson Five: "Ash Grove" Examples

Here are seven versions of the A part of the familiar tune, "Ash Grove."

  1. Bare melody
  2. Two-note "chords"
  3. Drones
  4. Moving fills
  5. Runs and arpeggios
  6. Basslines
  7. Chord rolls
  8. Flams

To expand this article, I hope to eventually discuss rhythmic embellishments like the root-fifth pattern and triangular chord patterns that I learned from Tim Seaman, as well as some ornamental embellishments like hammer rolls and turns. I also hope to talk a little about how one might go about combining the various embellishments into an arrangement.
